Greenargy is a fast-growing community-based solar energy company in Kumba, founded in 2023. We are dedicated to tackling energy poverty, promoting gender equality, and climate action. We empower rural communities by providing access to low-cost off-grid energy solutions. We are committed to bridging the energy gap by providing clean, sustainable, and affordable solar energy solutions tailored to meet the specific needs of rural communities in Cameroon.

Our innovative approach combines cutting-edge technology with community-driven strategies to empower homes, businesses, and institutions while fostering economic growth, gender equality and environmental sustainability. At Greenargy, we believe that access to clean energy is not just a privilege but a fundamental right that drives progress and transforms lives.

Greenargy’s mission is driven by the understanding that access to clean energy is vital for sustainable development and empowerment of communities, especially in rural areas where traditional energy sources like kerosene or firewood are predominantly used. These sources often lead to environmental degradation, health problems, and financial burdens for families.

To achieve Greenargy’s mission, Greenargy focuses on providing solar-powered products that can be used for various purposes, such as lighting homes, powering small appliances, and charging mobile devices. This not only reduces the reliance on traditional, polluting energy sources like kerosene lamps, Diesel Generators but also helps to promote gender equality by providing women and girls with access to education good health and better economic opportunities.

Growing up in rural community in Kumba, Cameroon, Dinga Franklin Fofung experienced firsthand the challenges of energy poverty. Growing up without access to electricity, a common situation for many children in such communities, Dinga and his family relied on kerosene lamps for lighting. This exposure to kerosene fumes led to a critical eye problem during his childhood, leaving a lasting impact on his health and shaping his determination to create change. Motivated by his experiences, Dinga envisioned a future where rural communities could access clean energy solutions.

Many years latter Dinga developed the idea of starting a solar distribution company aimed at providing high-quality, low-cost solar energy products and services. However, turning this vision into reality proved challenging due to financial constraints. Dinga faced numerous obstacles while seeking funding for his venture. He applied for loans from 13 different banks including microfinance institutions but was repeatedly turned down due to a lack of collateral. Attempts to raise capital from family and friends also failed, leaving him on the brink of giving up. Despite these setbacks, Dinga remained persistent.

His breakthrough came when he submitted a proposal to a Cocoa company. In the proposal, he outlined how solar energy solutions could benefit local cocoa farmers by reducing their reliance on traditional energy sources and enhancing productivity. Impressed by his vision, the company granted him an investment loan of 250,000 FCFA (approximately $400). With this initial funding, Dinga launched Greenargy Enterprise a solar distribution company dedicated to bringing affordable and clean energy access to underserved communities. Using a community market-based approach, Greenargy sold over 100 solar lamps within three months. This success enabled the company to secure an additional investment of 5 million FCFA (approximately $8,500 USD) from another Cocoa company.

 

Dinga’s leadership, Greenargy’s team comprises individuals who, like him, have lived experience with energy poverty, fostering a deep empathy and understanding of the communities they serve. This unique perspective allows Greenargy to develop solutions that precisely meet the energy needs of the people, working hand-in-hand with them in the design and implementation phases. 

Dinga’s vision for Greenargy extends beyond mere commerce; it embodies a commitment to sustainability and social responsibility, actively promoting the benefits of solar energy and raising environmental awareness in local events and initiatives. His journey from personal adversity to founding a successful social enterprise exemplifies resilience, innovation, and a profound dedication to empowering communities through affordable and clean, energy.
