From a Rural Community to Paris: How One Young Leader’s Journey is Shaping the Future of Clean Energy
In January 2025, Dinga Franklin Fofung, Founder and CEO of Greenargy, received the Outstanding Negotiator Award at the Best Diplomats International Conference in Paris. The recognition came after his outstanding contribution to negotiations on “Policies for Sustainable Energy Development Surrounding Renewable Energy – SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy).” The Paris conference focused on advancing dialogue around the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 7 and brought together participants from around the world.
But this achievement is about far more than receiving an international award.
It is the story of a young man from a rural community in Cameroon who transformed his lived experience of energy poverty into a mission to ensure that millions of others are not left behind.
Where the Journey Began
Long before speaking in international policy discussions in Paris, Dinga experienced the daily reality of energy poverty.
Growing up in a rural community where electricity was either unavailable or unreliable, evenings were illuminated by kerosene lamps. Students struggled to study after sunset, businesses closed early, healthcare services were limited, and opportunities that many people take for granted remained out of reach.
Communities like the one Dinga comes from are often overlooked when infrastructure investments are made. The lack of reliable electricity affects every aspect of development—from education and healthcare to entrepreneurship, women’s empowerment, agricultural productivity, and economic growth.
For millions of families across Africa, energy poverty is not simply an inconvenience. It is a barrier to opportunity.
Turning Experience into Purpose
Rather than accepting these challenges as permanent, Dinga chose to become part of the solution.
He founded Greenargy with one clear vision:
To make clean energy affordable, accessible, and reliable for underserved rural communities through digital innovation.
Today, Greenargy is evolving beyond a traditional renewable energy company into a Digital Energy Platform that is transforming how rural households and businesses access, finance, purchase, and manage clean energy solutions.
By combining innovative technology with flexible financing models—including PAYGo, Rent-to-Own, mobile money payments, and community-based distribution—Greenargy is helping remove the barriers that have prevented many families from accessing clean energy.
From Local Challenges to Global Conversations
Standing in Paris among delegates from around the world was a powerful reminder that local experiences matter in global policy discussions.
The Outstanding Negotiator Award recognized Dinga’s ability to advocate for policies that support sustainable energy development while ensuring that vulnerable and underserved communities remain at the center of the conversation.
His perspective was different because it was authentic.
He wasn’t speaking only from research or theory.
He was speaking from lived experience.
That perspective helped bring the voices of rural African communities into international discussions on renewable energy, sustainable development, and SDG 7.
Why This Recognition Matters
This award belongs not only to Dinga but also to every rural community that continues to face energy inequality.
It demonstrates that innovative solutions can emerge from places often overlooked by the world.
It also reinforces an important message:
The future of clean energy cannot be built by focusing only on cities.
True energy transition means ensuring that rural communities have equal access to affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy.
No one should be left behind.
Greenargy’s Mission Continues
While this international recognition is an important milestone, it is not the destination.
It is motivation to continue building digital solutions that accelerate energy access across underserved communities.
Greenargy remains committed to:
- Expanding access to affordable clean energy
- Digitizing energy access through innovative technology
- Creating inclusive financing models for low-income households
- Empowering local communities through sustainable energy solutions
